Alexander Frederick Richmond Wollaston was an English physician, explorer, naturalist, and author whose life was defined by a passion for travel and scientific discovery. Born in Clifton, Gloucestershire, in 1875, Wollaston qualified as a surgeon in 1903. Rather than settling into a traditional medical practice, he chose to dedicate his career to global exploration, mountaineering, botany, and ornithology.
Wollaston traveled extensively throughout his life, documenting his expeditions and scientific findings in several books. His contributions to the fields of geography and natural history were highly regarded, leading to his election as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1907. In his later years, Wollaston served as a tutor at King's College, Cambridge. His life came to a tragic end in 1930 when he was shot and killed by a deranged student at the university.
