James Slough Zerbe was an American inventor, mechanical and electrical engineer, and author who made unique contributions to early aviation and educational literature. Born in 1849, Zerbe lived and worked in several regions of the United States, including Ohio, New York City, and California. He is best remembered for his unconventional aircraft designs during the pioneering era of flight, where he experimented with multi-wing configurations. Among his most notable aeronautical creations were the Zerbe Sextuplane and the Zerbe Air Sedan, which showcased his innovative engineering vision.\n\nBeyond his hands-on engineering pursuits, Zerbe was a dedicated writer who sought to educate and inspire young minds. He authored a popular series of instructional books aimed at boys, covering practical and technical subjects such as carpentry, electricity, automobiles, and "aeroplanes." These guides reflected his belief in hands-on learning and technical literacy. In addition to these educational manuals, Zerbe also penned adventure and travel books, combining his technical curiosity with a narrative flair before his passing in 1921.
