Michael James Burry (born June 19, 1971) is an American investor, licensed physician, and financial commentator. Originally trained in medicine, Burry pivoted to the financial sector and founded the hedge fund Scion Capital, which he later operated as Scion Asset Management. He achieved global prominence for his exceptional foresight regarding the mid-2000s housing bubble. By recognizing the systemic instability of subprime mortgages early on, Burry positioned his fund to profit immensely from the impending collapse, a historic investment strategy that was later chronicled in the book and 2015 film The Big Short.\n\nBeyond his traditional investment career, Burry has increasingly focused on writing and public commentary. In November 2025, he announced the closure of Scion Asset Management, marking a significant transition in his professional life. Shortly thereafter, on November 23, 2025, he launched Cassandra Unchained, a newsletter hosted on the Substack platform. Through this publication, Burry shares his macroeconomic outlooks, market analyses, and financial critiques, bringing his characteristic contrarian perspective directly to a broader reading audience.
